Looking for a jazz dance class (SF, east bay preferred)
Howdy! After 30 years of being away from it, I have the urge to take a jazz dance class. I used to be reasonably competent, but I'm in my 40s and out-of-shape, so I'm looking for a beginner-level class. When I say jazz, I mean Broadway-style dancing, not something that involves a partner. I'm also looking for something that focuses on dance, not jazzercise.

Can anyone recommend a place in San Francisco, the Oakland/Berkeley area, or somewhere nearby that would have an adult beginner-level jazz class?

From SFGate: Boxer supports abortion deal
Boxer supports abortion deal

California Sen. Barbara Boxer, deep in the negotiations with health care holdout Ben Nelson, signed off on the abortion compromise that goes further than she wanted, but clears the way to get the health care bill out of the Senate by Christmas. Democrats consider the deadline a political imperative.

The compromise goes further than Rep. Lois Capps, D-Santa Barbara, wanted, but may help keep the Stupak crowd on board in the House, another political imperative.

Here's Boxer's statement with Sen. Patty Murray of Washington:

"We said all along that we wanted to ensure there was a firewall between private and public funds -- this compromise achieves that.

"We said we would not accept language that prohibited a woman from using her own private funds for her legal reproductive health care --this compromise meets that test.

"And we said we would stop Stupak -- which we did. Let's be clear -- we were both much happier with the Capps language and the language in the underlying bill.

"But compromise was necessary to get a health care bill for the American people, and this compromise achieves that."

Occult titles at DriveThruHorror.com
I'm the publisher relations manager at DriveThruHorror.com and we've just recently started carrying a few non-fiction books on magic and related topics (for example The Way of the Hedge Witch by F+W Media).

I'd really like to expand our selection of books on the occult and related topic. So, I'm looking for recommendations for small press publishers and independent authors to contact about listing their work on our sites. We currently offer titles in eBook format and we have a new print on demand service launching early next year so customer will be able to get their titles in print or pdf.

If you've got publishers or authors you think might be a good fit for the site or that could use an additional outlet to sell their books to interested customers, I'd love to hear about them.

ratchet straps/bungee cords?
Does anyone know where I can get ratchet straps or bungee cords (for tying down a bed in the back of a truck) in the Mission area without paying an enormous amount?  I could imagine the random junk stores carrying this stuff, but often there are things that I can totally picture the random junk stores having, and then none of them do. I assume Ace Hardware or Cole's will have them, but if there are discount-y places that carry them, that'd be better.

Cleopatra's temple to Isis; rediscovered
Apparently it has been unearthed from the massive earthquakes that destroyed it years ago. I find the timing very interesting - believe in 2012 lore or not - one of 'the' godesses w/ temple of all time has re-surfaced. A museum of all the underwater discoveries is in the works. It has been well preserved due to the saltwater. The learnings/discoveries from this will be quite interesting. I hope an anthropologist & archaeologist beyond the strictly academic veins are consulted as the museum comes together.

Enjoy... just in time for winter solstice!

Ginger Ale
* Start with fresh ginger root.
* Peel and cut about two square inches of the root and add it to a pot with about two liters of water.
* Bring to a boil
* Mix in 1/2 cup of sugar until it's completely dissolved, and then remove the mixture from the heat.
* When the mixture is cool enough that you can touch it without getting burnt -- but still very warm -- add in 1 * Tablespoon of yeast. (You can use the same yeast you have in your house for making bread, though it's also fun to experiment with different brewers' yeasts.)
* Mix well, and then let sit for about 15 minutes before you
pour the whole thing into a clean and empty two liter soda bottle.

You should now have less than 2 liters total, since some of the water will have boiled off in the decoction phase. Make sure that there is at least two inches of empty space at the top of the bottle.

*Put a balloon on top.

The balloon is a poor-man's "air lock". It let's carbon dioxide out of the bottle without letting oxygen in. You will need to let the air out of the balloon several times a day, however, in order to make sure that it doesn't pop off your bottle.

* After three days, add the juice of one lemon, put the top on your bottle and put the whole thing in the fridge.

Drink it up as soon as it gets cold!

Be aware that more than three days of room temperature brewing and this beverage will start to have significant alcohol content. By two weeks, it will be ale good and true, not soda pop at all.

heat and circuit breakers in SF proper

For those who rent: what's been your experience with heat sources and what the circuitry in your house/apartment will support?

I know that technically landlords are supposed to provide a source of heat that can make a dwelling 68 degrees, etc etc. I get the sense that most places don't realistically have this and people use space heaters to supplement.  That would be acceptable, in my case, except that everything (except the washing machine and fridge) in my two-bedroom apartment are on the same circuit, so my housemate and I cannot use space heaters at the same time, and neither of us can use a space heater if we're running the microwave - otherwise, we trip the circuit breaker.

It's not a shitty apartment (though not luxury, either), but I'm not really convinced the landlord--while pretty friendly--will just up and add more circuits or whathaveyou.  My housemate (the leaseholder) has been living here for years and for some reason has never bugged the landlord about this, so I'm trying to figure out what the status quo is in these parts before I proceed.  It's an oldish building - one of those Victorian or Edwardian (not sure which) deals divided into four apartments.

(also posted this to [info]sanfrancisco, apologies if you're seeing this twice.)

I was reading a book about astral projection, was thinking about how to apply a section on healing physical injuries, and started getting dizzy. Closed my eyes and saw a very strong image of two symbols I didn't recognize. Does anyone know if these have any particular meaning anywhere?

couch for sale + free albums
1) Couch w/sofa bed for sale, very nice condition, in the Mission, $125/best offer. Comment if interested thx :) I had a buyer put down a deposit and they have apparently flaked off, but giving them til monday. Will know then.

2) Several hundred albums on cassette tape, free to good home. 70s-90s, punk/metal/industrial/new wave/goth/alt/80's pop & rock/blabla. May include obscurities, OOP, vinyl-sourced stuff you might not hear just anywhere, since I did lots of trading in the 90's. Some are copies of varied quality & some are factory issue. Got an old car with a tape deck? Your luck. In the Mission. Goes to first taker who gets here to pick up.

I also have a fat stack of similar stuff on vinyl that's just sitting here for a rainy day for me to sort for ebay. If you're interested I can show them too, although I would like to get some value for the ones that have some.
